WACAC First Look:

            Supporting the Dream Act
Extension of the Annual Conference Session Proposal Deadline
California and Nevada Legislative Conferences . . . Registration Now Open

The Dream Act . . . Contact Your Legislator Today!
Did you know that 65,000 undocumented students graduate from high school each year in the United States?  As educators, we know that having access to a college education has a great impact on our students, their families and their entire communities.  We change lives each day as we inspire our students to reach for their dreams. Unfortunately, these dreams are often deferred as undocumented students do not have full access to higher education.  Today, we urge you to support “The Dream Act”*, a proposed legislation that would create a pathway to higher education and citizenship for undocumented students.  By sending an email to your Congressional Representatives you are not only advocating for this college access initiative but also speaking out on behalf of our educational community.   TAKE ACTION NOW by clicking on the following link:  http://capwiz.com/nacac/issues/alert/?alertid=13099226
Deadline December 10th for WACAC Annual Conference Session Proposals
The 2011 WACAC Conference Planning Committee is thrilled to have received wonderful session submissions, but we need more!  We are looking forward to putting on an engaging, exciting and relevant conference, but we need your help. In the spirit of, not only the holiday season, but recommendation letter writing and application review…seasons in which we could all use a little more time and a deadline extension…your WACAC elves have extended the deadline for session submissions!!  Hooray and no more excuses!  We will gladly be accepting session proposal submissions until December 10, 2010.  Gather those ideas and a few friends and submit today!
You can find the session proposal form on the WACAC website by clicking here: http://www.wacac.org/annconf

Imagine . . .

Imagine . . . all of the power our members have to support students in schools and colleges.
Imagine . . . all of the expertise our members have to share.
Imagine . . . all of the support our members and others receive from the WACAC Board, committee members, and NACAC.

This is the second letter our WACAC members will receive this Fall to update you on important events and activities.  Please take some time to review the information and volunteer your participation, as appropriate.  And, as always, please refer to our new website www.wacac.org    to learn more about WACAC and to contact a committee chair with an idea or question.

  • NEW WACAC WEBSITE: the Technology Committee has put the finishing touches on the new improved WACAC website www.wacac.org.  We believe you will appreciate the news feed, the reorganization of information, etc.  Give it a spin and certainly forward any suggestions you might have to David May or Peggy Hock.  Important Note:  to gain access to the member only sections, you’ll need to type in your email address used to gain WACAC membership and then request a temporary password and go on from there!   We appreciate all of Peggy and David’s  hard work and know that this format will allow members to find more information quickly.
  • JOIN THE WACAC FACEBOOK to keep up with the latest in our profession!
  • WACAC CONFERENCE SESSION PROPOSALS:  forms are available on the website http://wacac.org/annconf  and the deadline for proposals for the 2011 Conference is December 3rd.
  • SAVE THE DATES FOR THE SACRAMENTO AND CARSON CITY LEGISLATIVE CONFERENCES:  the Government Relations Committee has been working hard to plan a meaningful experiences in Sacramento.
  • Carson City this February.  If you would like to be a part of this, don’t be shy as the training is provided and appointments made for you!  Want to let our legislators know what you think about counselors in schools, about the price of higher education, about the Cal Grant?  This is your perfect opportunity.  Look for information coming soon about the WACAC Legislative Conference in             Sacramento, February 2 and 3rd . . . and in Carson City on February 10th .
  • THE IMPORTANCE OF NACAC MEMBERSHIP:  the Assembly Delegates for 2010 are very proud to let everyone know that Mike Pelly, VP Enrollment at Chapman University was elected by the
  • Assembly to serve on the NACAC Board of Directors!  In St. Louis, the decision was made by the NACAC membership to reduce the size of the Assembly, beginning next year.  In order for WACAC to have the largest voice possible for the next three years, we need to have as many of our WACAC members become NACAC members.  While the cost of the institutional membership is a consideration, our own Membership Committee asks those of you with institutional membership already to add members of your staff to the NACAC membership, as the per person cost is reasonable.  This needs to be done by the end of January as that is when the count is made.  Our voice representing our students, schools and colleges is only as strong as our Assembly Delegation.
  • IMAGINE GRANTS:  December 1st is the deadline for applications for projects or professional development proposals to the NACAC Imagine Grant Committee.  This committee administers $50,000 per
  • year in support of model projects that serve counselors and students in many ways.   Professional development funds can be requested by individuals who do not usually attend WACAC or NACAC to attend those programs, or to attend the Guiding the Way to Inclusion program put on by NACAC in Chicago this year in early August.  Questions?  READ MORE HERE:
  • IDEA:  members of the Diversity, Equity and Access Committee has been working hard and the IDEA Conference for 2011 is already planned.  We strongly encourage you and your colleagues to consider attending the IDEA Conference on May 24th at LMU.  More information will be coming your way!

Watch your email every two weeks for important updates from WACAC.
And let the Board know if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions!

A Message from the President

Welcome to Fall . . . and reminders all around about why we do what we do.
On behalf of the WACAC Executive Board I am happy to inaugurate the first of bimonthly letters and articles meant to update our members on what is happening in our professional organization and within our professional world.

At the August Executive Board Retreat we welcomed new members and focused on our three themes for 2010-11: service, leadership and stewardship. Our work together generated new plans and new directions, and you will be seeing the beginning of the fruits of our labors very shortly.

  • Our new Board members include Assembly Delegates Anne Aubert-Santelli (USC), Jasmin Escobar Taylor (Bishop’s School), Mary Hesser (Christian Brothers High School), and Bob Patterson (Stanford) as well as Membership Chair Emmi Harward (Bishops School), Technology and Research Co-Chair David May (Chapman), College Fair Co-Chair Nichelle Hoover Passanisi (Dominican), and Government Relations Co-Chair for Nevada Kati Swanson (Truckee Meadows Community College High School)
  • I have appointed two task forces to work on issues facing our members:
    • Strategic Directions Task Force led by former WACAC President Jim Whitaker (Claremont Graduate U) with members Dan Nannini (Santa Monica College), former President Linda Zimring (LA Unified), Bob Patterson (Stanford), and Michael McKeon (Saint Mary’s College)
    • Nevada Task Force led by former WACAC President Esther Hugo (LMU) with members David Webb (West Preparatory Academy), Kati Swanson (Truckee Meadows Community College High School), Jasmin Escobar Taylor (Bishops School), and Ed Schoenberg (Otis College of Art and Design)
  • The WACAC Website will be migrated within the next three weeks to a better server and better construct that will allow more members better access (and easier access!) to information and registration processes.
  • Our communication plan, beginning with semi-monthly articles from Board members, also includes a new presence and access to information through a new Google Group and Facebook accounts. In future members will be receiving initial emails about events, and then updated through our “GoogleFace” sites. Watch for information on how to join and become informed in less intrusive but hopefully more effective ways.

  • The Board also approved an initial plan to have WACAC join forces with PNACAC and RMACAC (Pacific Northwest and Rocky Mountain) to put on a “Super Conference” in Reno in 2012. Watch for updates on this exciting plan to bring the West together!

In addition to our Membership Meeting on September 29th in St. Louis, we look forward to our Annual Spring Conference, planned under the leadership of our President-Elect Greg McCandless (Sage Hill School.) We are happy to announce that the 2011 Spring WACAC Conference will be held at Loyola Marymount University from Tuesday, May 24 to Thursday, May 26.

Watch for more updates on WACAC activities to serve our members -- we encourage your comments, your questions, and your involvement!

Local Attractions and Weather

USF’s 55-acre campus sits right in the heart of the city of San Francisco. We encourage you to immerse yourself in our urban campus and the city that surrounds us.
San Francisco is known for high-end cuisine served at places like Jardiniere, Wexler’s, Kokkari, Waterbar, Epic Roasthouse, and The Slanted Door. All of these restaurants have great bar menus-if you can’t get a reservation we recommend you eat at the bar. But, the USF community also has some fabulous neighborhood favorites such as Sushi Bistro, Cha Cha Cha, Papalote Mexican Grill, Zazie, Magnolia Pub and Brewery, Twilight Café, and the Alembic. If you are in need of a java fix or are craving a light snack, Starbuck’s, Peet’s coffee, and La Boulange are within walking distance of campus. A guide to local services will be available at the conference.

You shouldn’t miss the city’s tourist destinations such as: Golden Gate Bridge (be brave – take a walk out on the bridge itself), The Haight (re-live the Summer of Love on the corner of Haight and Ashbury), Golden Gate Park (check out the de Young Museum and the California Academy of Sciences), Fisherman’s Wharf (look out for the sea lions), and Union Square (one word – shopping).

Interested in staying fit? USF’s Koret Health and Recreation Center will be available during your stay for a special WACAC conference price of $10.00 per day. This includes use of cardio machines, indoor swimming pool, weight room and group fitness classes. All Conference participants will be asked to sign a waiver that will be valid for all 3 days of the conference. For more information go to: http://www.usfca.edu/koret/. Or you can venture outside and go for a run through the Presidio down towards the Golden Gate Bridge. Another option is to take a stroll through Golden Gate Park and behold the beauty of the 1,017 acre park with features such as The Conservatory of Flowers, AIDS Memorial Grove, Japanese Tea Garden, and the Bison Paddock. You can even rent a rowboat and paddle around Stow Lake!

June in San Francisco: While the weather is very hard to predict in San Francisco you can usually expect the fog to roll in by the afternoon. We highly recommend that you dress in layers and that you bring a jacket.

See you soon!

IDEA Session Proposal Form 2010

IDEA Session Proposal Form 2010

In 2006 the Institute for Contemporary Leadership (ICL) conference adopted its official name change to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) workshop. WACAC and the Diversity, Equity, and Access (DEA) committee share in the vision of working closely together with NACAC to provide resources and guidance to our membership as we continue our work in serving students from varying ethnic, social, cultural, economic, physical/mental ability, and religious backgrounds, IDEA serves the membership as a multi-cultural professional network. Participants exchange ideas, questions, best practices, and solutions through thought provoking cross-cultural dialogues.

Guided by seasoned veterans, the workshop explores topics such as cross-cultural awareness, communication, and counseling that will both renew you in the work you already do, but bring a sense of freshness and innovation that IDEA has long been known for.

All innovative high school guidance personnel, energetic enrollment management, admission, outreach and recruitment staffs are welcome to attend this exciting institute where dialogue, collaboration, and cross-cultural awareness abound. Come join in the conversation, bring your best practices, questions and an overall willingness to learn from one another.

Examples of Sample Session Topics:

• Working with GLBTQ students
• Latinos in higher education
• The Impact of the California Budget on the CSU, UC, CCC and the Black Male
• Working with Undocumented Students
• Writing the DEA Grant

And many more!

We’re looking forward to seeing you at IDEA!

Please contact Keion Morgan, DEA Co-Chair/ IDEA Conference Chair if you have any questions.
